Big names unable to contest Municipal poll 2020 due to reservation

February 27: A meeting with all political parties was held at the conference hall of the office of the Deputy Commissioner on Thursday in connection with the reservation of wards under Silchar Municipality Board for conduct of Municipality Election, 2020. The meeting was presided over by the Deputy Commissioner Cachar Barnali Sharma.

At the outset, Assistant Commissioner of Cachar, Abhilash Barnawal presented the population data pertaining to Silchar Municipality Board area based on Census 2011. After a threadbare discussion and in consensus with the  notification issued by the Urban Development Department, it was informed that the percentage of Scheduled Caste (SC) population in Silchar Municipality area is 15.33. Accordingly, proportionate number of seats to be reserved for SC’s are four. Ward number 14,17, 20 & 25 having the highest SC population in descending order, are reserved for SC’s for the ensuing Municipality election out of which Ward number 14 and 20 were reserved for SC women by draw of lottery in front of all political parties.

Fifty percent of total 28 seats are to be reserved for women which includes the ward reserved for SC women. Wards number 14 and 20 are already reserved for SC women and remaining 12 wards i,e ward number 2, 3, 4, 8, 9,11,16,18, 22, 23, 26 and 28 were reserved for women (general) by rotation. Ward numbers 1, 5, 6, 7, 10, 12, 13,15,19, 21, 24 and 27 were earmarked as unreserved.

The meeting was also attended by District Development Commissioner Jessica Lalsim, Chairperson Silchar Municipality Board Niharendra Narayan Thakur, leaders of political parties, Ward Commissioners among others.

Some of the big names of exiting Ward Commissioners who will be unable to contest the Municipal election this time are Rajesh Das (Ward No.26), Abhronil (Jholak) Chakraborty (Ward No.28), Tamal Kanti Banik (Ward No.22), Bijendra Prasad Singh (Ward No.4), Amrit Mandal (Ward No.2) as all these wards were reserved for women. Municipal Vice Chairperson, Chameli Paul will also be unable to contest as her Ward No.14 was reserved for Woman (SC). Further, Sajal Banik, Ward Commissioner from Ward No.20 will also be unable to contest this time as this ward was reserved for SC.
