Barak Valley registers 738 Covid +ve cases on Thursday, 371 discharged & 2 deaths reported

There are 3,498 active Covid cases in Barak Valley

Jan 20: The number of coronavirus positive cases are gradually increasing in the three districts of Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Thursday, the number of fresh cases in the valley was somewhat less. A total of 738 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley. Further, during the day, 371 patients were cured and subsequently discharged in the three districts of the valley. At present, there are 3,498 active Covid cases in Barak Valley. It needs mention here that on Wednesday, Barak Valley registered 815 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Thursday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 479 positive cases   (It was 533 on Wednesday)
  • Karimganj: 162 positive cases (It was 208 on Wednesday)
  • Hailakandi:  97 positive cases (It was 74 on Wednesday)

The number of coronavirus cases in Cachar district is gradually increasing. The District Health Department of Cachar updated the Covid-19 data of Thursday at 5.50 PM. As per the latest data, the daily Covid count in Cachar crossed the 400-mark on Thursday. A total of 479 persons were found positive in the district on 20 January. Also, 230 patients were discharged (208 from home & 22 from hospital) during the day. With this, the number of active cases in Cachar has reached 2,141 out of which, 1,974 are in home isolation whereas 167 are admitted in various hospitals of the district. On Wednesday, 533 persons were found positive in Cachar.

As per the updated data, a total of 2,482 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) were done, out of which, 327 persons were found positive, whereas 152 were detected positive out of 382 RT-PCR Tests. With this, the total number of Covid cases since 1 Jan 2022 reached 4,167 whereas during this phase, 2,013 patients were discharged. This data was provided by the district health department from 12 noon of 19 January to 12 noon of 20 January, 2022.

There has been a gradual rise in the number of daily positive cases in Cachar district. The last 24 hours (5 PM on 19 January to 5 PM on 20 January) witnessed the death of 02 Covid-19 positive patients at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). This was informed by Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH on Thursday evening.

The deceased were identified as:

  1. Mahendra Devi (78) from Joypur Part-2 in Cachar district tested Covid positive and was admitted at SMCH on 11 January. The patient, however, breathed her last at 10.55 AM on 20 January, 2022.
  2. Manish Debnath (56) from Lakhisahar in Hailakandi district tested Covid positive and got admitted at SMCH on 14 January. He died at 12.45 PM on 20 January, 2022.

Dr Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH informed that till 5 PM on 20 January, there were 43 Covid-19 active patients at Silchar Medical College. Further, 02 patients were put under ventilator support, and 12 in oxygen support. In the last 24 hours, 12 Covid positive patients were admitted at SMCH and 06 were discharged. A total of 77 patients were detected positive in RAT at SMCH and 25 in RTPCR on Thursday. Out of the active cases, 68 opted for home isolation and 3 were transferred to Covid Care Centres.

On Thursday, Hailakandi registered 97 (95 RAT & 02 RT-PCR) new COVID-19 cases. The district has altogether has 491 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 846 RAT tests and 47 RT-PCR tests were done. 98 patients were discharged during the day. With this, the district tally of Covid cases has now reached 8,846 (1st,  2nd & 3rd wave).

As of now, a total of 4,927 patients were discharged. It needs mention here that 74 persons were found positive in Hailakandi on Wednesday. Till date, 52 persons died due to Covid-19 in Hailakandi district.  A total of 1,463 persons were vaccinated on Thursday.

There was a sharp rise in the number of Covid patients in Karimganj district. Karimganj registered 162 fresh COVID cases on Thursday. The district has currently 866 active COVID cases, while 43 patients were discharged on Thursday. 1,127 swab samples were collected during the day. It needs mention here that 208 persons were detected positive in Karimganj on Wednesday.

On Thursday, out of 61,359 tests, 7,929 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 6,78,057. The positivity rate in the state is 12.92 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 1,716 positive cases during the day. Further, on Thursday, 12 died in the state due to COVID-19. The death toll in the state stands at 6,260. The recovery rate is 92.81 percent. Also, 1,960 persons were discharged during the day. There are at present 41,118 active Covid patients in the state.

After a brief respite in the number of infections, India on Thursday saw a new high for the third wave as the count of daily COVID-19 cases crossed 3 lakh. India witnessed over 3 lakh cases in a day after 8 months, as per Union health ministry’s data. India logged 3,17,532 cases in the last 24 hours taking the tally to 38,218,773. The active Covid-19 cases in the country rose to 19,24,051, the highest in 234 days. Increase of 93,051 cases was recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours. The death toll climbed to 4,87,693 with 491 fresh fatalities, as per Health Ministry’s data. 9,287 cases of the fast-spreading variant, Omicron, have been detected so far in 29 states, said the ministry. There has also been a 3.63 per cent increase in Omicron cases since Wednesday.
