Barak Valley registers 717 Covid-19 +ve cases on Wednesday; 5 deaths at SMCH

Active cases 3,050 in Barak Valley

May 19: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in the three districts of Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Wednesday, the number of fresh cases in the valley increased once again. A total of 717 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Tuesday, Barak Valley registered 544 positive cases. At present, there are 3,050 active Covid cases in Barak Valley.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Wednesday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 465 positive cases   (It was 342 on Tuesday)
  • Karimganj: 120 positive cases (It was 86 on Tuesday)
  • Hailakandi: 132 positive cases (It was 116 on Tuesday)

A total of 465 new cases of COVID-19 was reported on Wednesday in Cachar. As per the updated data, a total of 6,040 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) were done, out of which, 316 persons were found positive, whereas 149 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. This was informed by Suman Choudhury, District Media Expert on Wednesday night. With this, the total number of Covid cases in 2021 reached 5,386 in 2021, whereas during the year, 3,737 patients were discharged. With this, the number of active cases in Cachar has reached 1,605.

Death of Covid-19 patients continued unabated in Barak Valley. The last 24 hours witnessed demise of 05 more Covid-19 positive patients at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). This was informed by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH. Their detailed reports were forwarded to the State Death Audit Board as per the protocol. Out of the 05 deceased at SMCH during the last 24 hours, 03 are from Cachar district and 02 are from Hailakandi.

The deceased were identified as: Shiraj Uddin Choudhury (78) from Shahabad, Lala in Hailakandi district,  Husne Ara Begum Choudhury (40) from Lala in Hailakandi, Shankar Paul Choudhury (56) from Tarapur, Silchar, Dilip Roy (70) from Sarat Pally in Silchar and Jiten Kangshabanik (74) from Bilpar, Silchar.

Hailakandi registered 132 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday. Of the 132 positive cases detected on Wednesday, 122 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and 10 found positive in RT-PCR test. The district has altogether 776 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 1,297 RAT tests and 53 RT-PCR tests were done. 170 patients were discharged during the day. It needs mention here that 116 persons were found positive in Hailakandi on Tuesday. With this, the district tally of Covid cases has now reached 4,733.

As of now, in the 18 plus category, 6,823 persons have received the 1st dose of the vaccine. In the 45 plus category, 47,161 have received the 1st dose of the vaccine, whereas, 15,142 have been administered the 2nd dose in Hailakandi district.

Karimganj registered 120 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 6,210. Of the 120 active cases detected on Wednesday, 117 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and three under RT-PCR. It needs mention that on Tuesday, 86 persons were detected as Covid positive in Karimganj district.

The district has currently 679 active COVID-19 cases while 222 patients have been discharged from hospitals and home isolation on Wednesday. 3,911 swab samples were collected on Wednesday, which include 3,828 tests conducted under RAT and 83 tests under RT-PCR. Altogether 2,57,236 samples have been tested so far. 46:persons with high risk contacts traced and tested on Wednesday. There are five containment zones in Karimganj town.

On Wednesday, out of 1,02,040 tests, 6,143 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 3,47,001. The positivity rate in the state is 6.02 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 913 positive cases during the day. Further, on Wednesday, 73 more persons lost their lives in the state due to COVID-19. With this, the death toll in the state reached 2,433. On Wednesday, 4,057 patients were discharged in Assam. With this, a total of 2,94,831 patients got cured and were subsequently discharged

Further, during the day, 89 patients died in Assam due to COVID-19. Out of the 89 deceased, 26 are from Kamrup Metro; 08 each from Kamrup Rural & Dibrugarh; 06 from Karbi Anglong; 05 from Cachar; 03 each from Jorhat, Morigaon, Sonitpur, Tinsukia; 02 each from Barpeta, Charaideo, Goalpara, Hojai, Kokhrajhar, Nagaon, Sivasagar & Udalguri; 01 each from Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Hailakandi, Nalbari and South Salamara. The death tally of the state now stands at 2,433.
