Barak Valley registers 568 Covid +ve cases on Sunday; 4 deaths at SMCH

Active cases 2,741 in Barak Valley

May 16: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in the three districts of Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Sunday, the number of fresh cases in the valley increased. A total of 568 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley during the day. It needs mention here that on Saturday, Barak Valley registered 567 positive cases. At present, there are 2,741 active Covid cases in Barak Valley.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Sunday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 430 positive cases   (It was 352 on Saturday)
  • Karimganj: 62 positive cases (It was 103 on Saturday)
  • Hailakandi: 76 positive cases (It was 112 on Saturday)

The District Health Department of Cachar updated the Covid-19 data of Sunday at 11.57 PM. As per the latest data, 26 more persons were detected as coronavirus positive during the day. With this, a total of 430 persons were found positive in the district on 16 May. As per records, this is the highest single day spike in the number of Covid-19 cases in Cachar since 2020.

Earlier, at 6.00 PM, it was informed that 235 persons were found positive. The data was revised at 10 PM when 169 more were detected positive and the day’s tally then reached 404. However, now it was finally revised to 430 total positive cases. With this, the number of active cases in Cachar has reached 1,325. It needs mention here that the total number of positive cases detected on Saturday was 352.

As per the updated data, a total of 1,688 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) were done, out of which, 230 persons were found positive, whereas 230 more were detected positive in RT-PCR Test. This was informed by Suman Choudhury, District Media Expert on Sunday night. With this, the total number of Covid cases in 2021 reached 4,328 in 2021, whereas during the year, 3,328 patients were discharged.

Death of Covid-19 patients continued unabated in Barak Valley. The last 24 hours witnessed demise of 04 more Covid-19 positive patients at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). This was informed by Dr. Bhaskar Gupta, Vice Principal of SMCH. Their detailed reports were forwarded to the State Death Audit Board as per the protocol. All the 04 deceased at SMCH during the last 24 hours are from Cachar district.

The 04 deceased were identified as: Bappa Roy (43) from Borjalenga in Cachar district, Shibani Das (66) from Srima Pally in College Road, Silchar, Haridas Roy (75) from Salgonga in Cachar district and Sajal Kanti Malakar (48) from Tarapur, Silchar.

Hailakandi registered 76 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. Of the 76 positive cases detected on Sunday, 69 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and 07 found positive in RT-PCR test. The district has altogether 706 active COVID-19 cases. During the day, 1,158 RAT tests and 28 RT-PCR tests were done. 10 patients were discharged during the day from Civil Hospital. It needs mention here that 112 persons were found positive in Hailakandi on Saturday. With this, the district tally of Covid cases has now reached 4,497.

Karimganj reported 62 fresh COVID-19 cases on Sunday pushing the coronavirus tally in the district to 5,856. Of the 62 active cases detected on Sunday, 54 have been found positive under Rapid Antigen Test and eight under RT-PCR. It needs mention here that on Saturday, 103 persons were tested Covid-19 positive in Karimganj.

The district has altogether 710 active COVID-19 cases while 48 patients have been discharged from hospital and home isolation on Sunday. 1,127 swab samples were collected on Sunday. Altogether 2,49,134 samples have been tested so far. 21 persons with high risk contacts traced and tested on Sunday. Five containment zones have come up in Karimganj town on Sunday.

On Sunday, out of 42,884 tests, 3,650 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive in Assam. With this, the state tally of coronavirus has now gone upto 3,28,629. The positivity rate in the state is 8.51 percent. Kamrup (Metro) district registered 1,197 positive cases during the day. Further, on Sunday, 56 more persons lost their lives in the state due to COVID-19. With this, the death toll in the state reached 2,179. On Sunday, 4,225 patients were discharged in Assam. With this, a total of 2,81,726 patients got cured and were subsequently discharged

Further, during the day,56 patients died in Assam due to COVID-19. Out of the 56 deceased, 13 are from Kamrup Metro; 5 from Udalguri; 4 each from Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Kamrup Rural & Sonitpur; 3 each from Cachar, Golaghat & Karbi Anglong; 2 each from Darrang Hojai & Tinsukia, 1 each from Baksha, Barpeta, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Lakhimpur, Nagaon & Nalbari. The death tally of the state now stands at 2,179.
