Barak Valley registers 396 positive cases on Thursday

August 14: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Thursday, the number of fresh cases was somewhat less in the valley in comparison to the previous day. A total of 396 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley. It needs mention here that on Wednesday, Barak Valley registered 421 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Thursday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 307 positive cases   (It was 191 on Wednesday)
  • Karimganj: 17 positive cases  (It was 141 on Wednesday)
  • Hailakandi: 72 positive cases (It was 89 on Wednesday)

On Thursday, Cachar registered it’s biggest single-day jump of 307 positive cases. More than 5000 Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) were conducted throughout Cachar on Thursday, out of which, 265 tested positive. Another 42 persons were detected as COVID-19 positive during the day as per RT-PCR Test.

The District Media Expert further informed that Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) was done among the school teachers. A total of 63 school teachers tested coronavirus positive during the day. Apart from this RAT was conducted in various market places and crowded areas in Cachar. Many positive patients detected during the day have opted for home isolation, whereas symptomatic persons were admitted in the hospitals.

Rapid Test was done among 1647 school teachers of Cachar, out of which, 63 tested positive. Here is the break up:

  • Bikrampur: 4 found positive out of 200 Rapid Antigen Test (RAT)
  • Sonai: 2 found positive out of 85 RAT
  • Dholai: 3 found positive out of 263 RAT
  • Harinagar: 7 found positive out of 224 RAT
  • Udharbond: 10 found positive out of 130 RAT
  • Lakhipur: 01 found positive out of 150 RAT
  • Borkhola: 18 found positive out of 293 RAT
  • UPHC: 18 found positive out of 302 RAT

Four persons who were COVID-19 positive died at SMCH on Wednesday. Their reports were sent to State Death Audit Board for confirmation. However, as per sources, the four persons who passed away are Abdul Ahad Laskar (18) from Hailakandi. He was admitted at SMCH at 1.42 PM on Wednesday with acute liver failure. He, however, collapsed within an hour on the same day. The 3 others who lost their lives are Dhaneshwar Singha (78) from Patharkandi in Karimganj district, Biplob Kumar Karmakar (67) from Badarpur and Biswajit Kar (53) from Lakhipur in Cachar.

Out of the 4 deceased at SMCH on Wednesday, the State Death Audit Board has recognised 2 of the cases as death due to COVID-19. The two persons certified by the Board to have died of COVID-19 are Dhaneshwar Sinha (78) of Karimganj and Biswajit Kar (53) of Cachar.

72 fresh COVID-19 positive cases have been reported from Hailakandi district on Thursday, taking the total tally to 1,548. Health authorities here disclosed that of the 72 positive cases detected on Thursday, 63 cases have been detected under the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) and nine under RT-PCR. Altogether 676 cases have been found positive under RAT with over 50 per cent without travel history. 1,054 persons on being cured have been released from hospitals.The number of active cases is 486.

Karimganj district registered only 17 new COVID-19 positive cases on Thursday. The health department has appealed to people to come voluntarily for testing. Rapid Antigen tests were conducted in many parts of the district. Further, 17 more patients were also discharged during the day.

Apart from the valley, a total of 2796 persons tested positive in Assam on Thursday, thereby taking the state tally to 71,795. As of now, there are 22,240 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, 2174 patients were also discharged from across the state during the day. With this, a total of 49,383 persons were discharged in Assam. Moreover, during the day, 8 persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, thereby taking the death tally to 169.

With a record single-day increase of 66,999 cases, India’s COVID-19 tally mounted to 23,96,637 on Thursday, while the number of patients who have recovered from the disease surged to 16,95,982, pushing the recovery rate to 70.77 per cent in the country, according to the Union health ministry. The death toll due to COVID-19 climbed to 47,033 with 942 people succumbing to the disease in the last 24 hours.
