Barak Valley registers 371 positive cases on Friday

August 7: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. On Friday, the number of fresh cases again was on the rise in the valley. A total of 371 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley. It needs mention here that on Thursday, Barak Valley registered 310 positive cases.

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Friday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 250 positive cases (It was 187 on Thursday)
  • Karimganj: 58 positive cases (It was 79 on Thursday)
  • Hailakandi: 63 positive cases (It was 44 on Thursday)

Cachar district registered its highest single day spike of 250 positive cases on Friday, thereby taking the district tally to 2603. On Friday, 3 slots of RT-PCR tests were declared. A total of 38 persons were found positive in the RT-PCR Tests. A maximum number of 212 persons were tested positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT). The youngest person to get infected with COVID-19 during the day is a 2-day old baby from Borkhola who is presently admitted at SMCH (SARI Ward Pediatrics). State health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma in a tweet on Friday night also confirmed that 250 positive cases were detected in Cachar on Friday.

A large number of positive cases on Friday were detected through contact tracing. Cases on account of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) and Severe Acute Respiratory Illness (SARI) were also also found during the day. Apart from Urban Centre at Trunk Road, Silchar, COVID-19 Screening Centres were also started at Teachers’ Training College, Link Road, Silchar and Mahamaya LP School, Rongpur, Silchar. More than 2000 rapid tests were done on Friday in these centres. Further, mobile RAT vehicles are also available at various market places where persons can go and do the tests

Further, as per sources in the district administration, no decision of lockdown has yet been approved by the state government. As such, the weekend lockdown on Saturday & Sunday (8 & 9 August) will continue as usual. Suman Choudhury, District Media Expert. informed that MLA of Udharbond, Mihir Kanti Shome was tested coronavirus positive on Friday. He was admitted at Silchar Medical College & Hospital (SMCH). Apart from him, former Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) Chairperson, Niharendra Narayan Thakur also tested positive during the day. Mr. Thakur too will be admitted at SMCH. They were detected positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT).

On Friday, 63 fresh COVID-19 positive cases have been reported from Hailakandi district, taking the total tally to 1248. Health authorities here disclosed that of the 63 positive cases detected on Friday, 58 cases have been detected under the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT). A total of 405 cases have been found positive under RAT so far with majority of them without travel history. 20 persons on being cured have been discharged from hospitals on Friday, taking the total number of persons released to 898.The number of active cases in the district is currently 342.

Karimganj district registered 58 new COVID-19 positive cases on Friday. This takes the district tally to 1092. Apart from this, 08 persons were discharged in Karimganj.

Apart from the valley, a total of 2679 persons tested positive in Assam on Friday, thereby taking the state tally to 55,496. As of now, there are 16,552 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, 1585 patients were also discharged from across the state during the day. With this, a total of 38,809 persons were discharged in Assam. Moreover, during the day, 6 persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, thereby taking the death tally to 132.

India’s coronavirus cases passed 20 lakh after a record surge of 62,538 new patients in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said this morning. It took three weeks for the country’s Covid count to double; the tally had crossed 10 lakh cases on July 17. A total of 41,585 Covid-linked deaths have been reported so far; 886 patients have died since yesterday. More than 13.78 lakh patients have recovered since the beginning of the pandemic, the government data shows; the recovery rate stood at 67.98 per cent this morning.
