Barak overflows: Flood water inundates Silchar Railway Station

May 1: Due to incessant rainfall since the last few days, the water level of river Barak started to rise. From Wednesday morning, the water level at Annapurna Ghat was increasing rapidly. As per report received from Assam Water Resource Department, river Barak at Annapurna Ghat, Silchar at 12 noon on Wednesday was flowing much above the danger level and was recorded at 21.42 metres. The danger level at this point is 19.83 metre. The water level was was rising by 4 cm per hour. This is the highest level of water (21.42 mt) at Annapurna Ghat recorded this year.

Meanwhile, since morning on Wednesday, the river was over-topped and the water started to enter through the backside of Tarapur Railway colony. Meanwhile, in the afternoon, the quarters inside the Tarapur Railway Station complex was inundated. Water is now gradually spreading in larger Tarapur area.

Due to overflowing of River Barak, the Silchar- Kalain Road from ch 460.000 M to ch. 615.00 M (length 155 M) of sinking zone portion at Tarapur Shib Bari Road, Silchar is closed for heavy vehicular traffic until further order as the water level is alarmingly rising at this stretch. This was stated in a notification issued by RB Chakraborty, Executive Engineer, PWD (Silchar & Udharbond) on 18 May, 2022.
