Bajrang & VHP calls off their protest, OC of Silchar Sadar Police Station transferred
April 3: Bajrang Dal and Viswa Hindu Parishad (VHP) had given a call for a protest movement on 4 April for allegedly man handling five Bajrangi’s in police custody. However, on 2 April, both Bajrang Dal and VHP has issued statements wherein they informed that the protest movement supposed to be held on 4 April was called off in the backdrop of transfer of 4 police personnel including OC of Silchar Sadar Police Station.
Earlier, on the issue of attack on a minority family, five youths belonging to the Bajrang Dal were arrested by Cachar Police. It was later on alleged that the police inflicted physical torture upon them while they were in police custody. It was against this alleged torture that the protest movement was called by Bajrang Dal and VHP on 4 April. But with the transfer of the OC & 3 other policemen, the organisations decided to cancel the movement.
OC of Silchar Sadar Police Station, Jyoti Prasad Handique was transferred in the same post at Morigaon. ADGP (Admin) MP Gupta issued the transfer order on Saturday. As per sources, OC of Dabaka Police Station is most likely to get transferred as the OC of Silchar Sadar Police Station. In a press release issued on Saturday, VHP stated that out of the 7 policemen involved in custodial torture of the 5 Bajrangis, 4 of them were transferred. They also raised the demand of strict action by the department on 3 other policemen involved in this incident.
