Awareness campaign on mental health & tobacco control held in Radhamadhab College

Feb. 24: National Service Scheme (NSS) unit of Radhamadhab College, Silchar organised an awareness campaign on Students’ Mental Health and also a sensitisation campaign for college students on Tobacco Control on Thursday. The awareness programme was held with active collaboration with District Tobacco Control Cell, District Health Society, Cachar in the conference hall of the college.

The guests who were present as resource persons during the awareness campaign were Dr Ibrahim Ali Ahmed- District Tobacco Nodal Officer, Saswati Dutta, Clinical Psychologist, SM Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar and Abhijit Bhattacharjee, District Health Manager, Assam Cancer Care Foundation. The programme was presided over by Dr Debashish Roy, Principal of the college. Arunabha Bhattacharjee, IQAC Coordinator was the special invitee.

Explaining the objectives of the campaign, Dr Ch Mani Kumar Singha, Programme Officer of NSS, Radhamadhab College Unit said that not only physical health, but well-being of a person also depends on sound mental health. Dr Debashish Roy, Principal of the College welcomed the resource persons and said that both the two issues on which they would deliver are most relevant topics of the time. IQAC Coordinator, Arunabha Bhattacharjee also highlighted the evil effects of tobacco consumption.

In her speech, Saswati Dutta, Clinical Psychologist, SM Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar explained in lucid terms the importance of being mentally sound. Taking real life examples, she explained how stressful life can impact the mental well-being of the students. She also suggested ways and means to cope up with stress and strains. Elaborating on anti-tobacco campaign, Dr Ibrahim Ali Ahmed- District Tobacco Nodal Officer highlighted various instances of tobacco consumption and substance abuse. He also stated that students should come out of the web of peer group influence in consuming tobacco substances. Abhijit Bhattacharjee, District Health Manager, Assam Cancer Care Foundation explained to the students how consumption of tobacco items leads to cancer.

The programme came to an end with a vote of thanks. Swarnali Roy Choudhury, Assistant Professor in the Department of Philosophy compered the programme.
