Assam University goes down to Rank 97 out of 100 Universities in 2019 NIRF ranking

April 8: The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) under Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) released the NIRF India Ranking 2019. On Monday evening, President Ram Nath Kovind declared the NIRF India Rankings 2019 at Plenary Hall, Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi. He also announced the Atal Ranking of Institutions for Innovation Achievements (ARIIA) 2019.

The NIRF rankings was released for a total of 9 categories – Overall, Universities, Engineering, Colleges, Management, Pharmacy, Medical, Architecture, and Law. The Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and IIT-Delhi ranked second and third in the list respectively. Of the top 10 institutes, seven are IITs. The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and the Banaras Hindu University ranked seventh and 10th respectively. The Delhi University’s Miranda House was ranked the best among colleges across the country, while the varsity’s St Stephen’s College was ranked fourth.

The ranking is done on the basis of teaching, learning and resources, research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusive, and perception.

In the category of University, there were 100 nominations. Out of the 100, Assam University ranked 97 out of 100 Universities in 2019 NIRF ranking. On the other hand, NIT Silchar ranked 51 out of 200 Engineering colleges in 2019 NIRF Ranking.

It needs mention here that in 2018, the rank of Assam University was 87 out of 100 Universities. This implies that Assam University has dropped to 10 places down in comparison to 2018. In 2018, Assam University secured a score of 38.79.  Whereas, in this year (2019), Assam University secured 38.67. The following are the scores secured by the other Universities of North East India:

  • Tezpur University- Rank 29
  • North Eastern Hill University (NEHU)- Rank 39
  • Gauhati University- Rank 42
  • Mizoram University- Rank 76
  • Dibrugarh University- Rank 86
  • Assam University, Silchar- Rank 97
  • Rajiv Gandhi University- Rank 99

According to officials more than 4000 institutes had submitted their data for NIRF ranking this year. NIRF was approved by the MHRD and launched by Minister of Human Resource Development on September 29, 2015. This was the fourth edition of NIRF rankings.
