Assam Univ Students’ Union opposes holding of exam, proposes assignment based evaluation

July 9: In a representation made to the Dean’s Committee in presence of the Vice Chancellor and Registrar in-charge of Assam University, the Students’ Union put forth their suggestions as regards holding of examination amidst the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Citing the alarming rise in the number of COVID-19 positive cases in Barak Valley and also of constraints in online mode of teaching- learning & examination, Assam University Students’ Union discarded any attempt by the University to hold any examination either for the the students of affiliated colleges or for the varsity students. They emphasized upon the safety and security of the students during this pandemic.

The Representatives of Assam University Students’ Union (AUSU) in its memorandum submitted to the Vice Chancellor put forth their demands regarding conduct of examination in view of the prevailing extraordinary circumstances:

  • No students from the university or affiliated colleges/institute will sit for offline examination.
  • For intermediate students’, only internal marks should be considered to promote them to the next semester.
  • For final year students’, 50% marks should be taken from internal assessment and 50% from the previous best semester’s mark.
  • For final year students’, if the University wants to conduct the online examination, it must be on the basis of  assignments only.
  • The same policy ought to be applied for the students having arrears paper.

Later on, expressing their views, the AUSU President Biswarup Bhattacharjee, Vice President Joydeep Nandi and General Secretary Aritra Dhar said that, “We have put forth our views before the Dean’s Committee. We cannot let the varsity authorities to jeopardize the safety of the students during this pandemic. We strongly demand that our demands be accepted by the University while taking the final decision regarding the even semester examinations.”
