Water crisis in major parts of New Silchar, Ex-Ward Commissioner writes to SMB

June 1: Scarcity of water has become a major cause of concern for the inhabitants of greater New Silchar area. The water supply department seems to take the citizens for a ride. This has become a regular phenomenon since a long time. It has become very difficult even to manage drinking water at present. This was alleged by ex-Municipal Ward Commissioner, Jayati Bhattacharjee of Ward No. 13, Silchar.

In a letter addressed to the Executive Officer of Silchar Municipal Board (SMB) on 31 May, former Ward Commissioner Jayati Bhattacharjee wrote that the present situation is very critical and most of the people have to carry water for regular consumption from the houses of those who have deep tube well. She alleged that the people of the greater New Silchar area has been suffering due to water crisis almost throughout the year, but the problem has acquired greater significance during this summer.

“Initially, we thought that the Municipal Board would pay attention to this burning problem and come forward to solve it. But curiously, SMB did nothing fruitful to resolve the water crisis. The inhabitants are regularly paying water tax to the civic authority, but inspite of that, they are being deprived of drinking water,” wrote the former Ward Commissioner to SMB. She said that as a result of water crisis, the inhabitants of Sonai Road, Hailakandi Road and Public School Road are suffering a lot. Jayati Bhattacharjee urged upon the Executive Officer of SMB to solve the water crisis on a war footing.
