Assam receives 15,000 doses of Covaxin on Friday, 50,000 more doses to be procured by this week
As of now, Covaxin will not be given as 1st dose
June 4: Assam government on Friday has procured 15,000 doses of Covaxin in the state. This was announced by Health Minister Keshab Mahanta during a press meet in Guwahati on Friday. He further said, “All those who have availed Covaxin as the 1st dose, we are going to keep 2nd dose of Covaxin ready for such people. Very soon, we would get 50,000 more doses of Covaxin within a week. As per data available with us, around 1.5 lakh people in the state would require Covaxin as their 2nd dose.” The minister assured that earlier it was specified that the 2nd dose of Covaxin should be taken after 28 days, but now it has been informed that the 2nd dose can be taken after 42 days. He assured that those who has taken Covaxin as the 1st dose need not worry as the govt will make available the 2nd dose for them within the stipulated time.

There has been a crisis of Covaxin in the state, which has become a major cause of concern for all those who had taken their 1st dose and is awaiting for their next jab. At present, Covishield is being administered in majority of the districts of Assam. Such a situation was also reported from Cachar district. The Cachar district administration has kick started a ward-wise vaccination drive at 28 centres in urban Silchar on Friday where people were being administered Covishield.

Meanwhile, many were seen to express helplessness as regards availing the 2nd dose of Covaxin. At present, Covaxin is not available in the vaccination centres in Cachar. For them, who had taken Covaxin as the first dose, their date for the 2nd dose is already due and so these people are in great anxiety. However, the Health Minister on Friday has assured that they have already got 15,000 doses of Covaxin and 50,000 more doses will be available by this week. As per data, around 1.5 lakh people in the state would have to be administered the 2nd dose of Covaxin who have already availed the 1st dose. Keshab Mahanta said that the government will definitely procure Covaxin for these people and they need not worry. The minister also stated that as of now, Covaxin would not be administered as 1st dose.
