TMC MP S.S.Roy terms Assam accord as absurd document
“Assam, Mizoram & Punjab accords signed by Rajiv Gandhi are absurd”, said Rajya Sabha MP Sukhendu Sekhar Roy belonging to the Trinamool Congress (TMC). The Assam Accord was signed by then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi with All Assam Students Union (AASU) in 1985. Roy who himself was a leader of Congress then came out sharply against these peace accords signed by Rajiv Gandhi. According to him, the three peace accords signed with Assam, Mizoram and Punjab are “absurd.”
Sukhendu Sekhar Roy was the leader of the TMC Parliamentary team which came to Silchar recently after the publication of the NRC final draft but was detained in the airport itself by Assam Police. According to Roy, Assam police did not allow Trinamool’s seven-member team to step out of Silchar airport even to buy food .
Roy was highly critical of these accords and termed these as “time barred.” “These are 33-year-old accords. What is the motive behind implementing these three-decade old accords now? If Modi government is so interested in executing decade old treaties and accords, then would the government also implement the Liaquat-Nehru pact signed in 1950? This is nothing but an evil design by the Modi government to polarise the religious and linguistics minorities.”
