Assam JEE scam: Bail plea of 5 accused rejected; sent for 5 days judicial custody
Oct. 29: A big scam centering JEE 2020 came to surface in Assam following an FIR by Mitradev Sharma at the Azara police station in Guwahati. The FIR stated that the candidate, who scored 99.8%, allegedly didn’t appear for the test held on September 5, but rather a proxy candidate appeared on his behalf in the exam.
Acting immediately, 5 persons were arrested by Assam Police on Wednesday. They were produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court on Thursday. Their bail plea was rejected by the CJM and were sent for 5 days judicial custody. The accused are Dr. Jyotirmoy Das, Neel Nakhatra Das, Hemendra Nath Sarma, Pranjal Kalita and Hirukamal Pathak.
In fact, the FIR alleged that the candidate had to appear for the JEE examination at a center in Borjhar in Guwahati. But after completing the biometric attendance formalities, he came out of the examination hall with the help of the invigilator and someone else gave that candidate the exam. The complainant has alleged that the parents of the candidate, both of whom are practicing doctors, had paid a sum of Rs 15-20 lakhs to a private coaching institute in Guwahati to help the candidate in the crime. Guwahati, DCP (West) Suprottiv Lal Barua while speaking to a national daily said that a special investigation team has been formed to investigate these allegations.
