Assam govt to impose fine of ₹500 for not wearing mask in public place

May 7: In the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, Assam government has issued strict direction for wearing face mask in public places or work place so that one does not gets infected with coronavirus. Those who will violate this direction will be imposed a fine of ₹500. This was stated by State Health minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma during a press meet in Guwahati on Thursday. The order was issued under the Epidemic Diseases Act to halt the spread of COVID-19.

The minister further said that it is not mandatory to cover the mouth and nose with readymade masks, one can also use a gamosha or piece of cloth to cover one’s face. He also issued a word of cation against the shop owners. He emphasized on the need of maintaining social distancing. Not more than 5 persons should be accommodated in any shop.  The minister said, “If it so happens that anybody gets infected with COVID-19 while visiting any crowded shop, then not only the shops will be closed and the owner send for 28 days quarantine, but he/she would be help responsible for spreading the virus.”
