Assam extends vehicle scrappage one-time settlement scheme till March 2026

way2barak, Sept 20: In a move aimed at reducing the number of old and unfit vehicles on the roads while easing financial burden on vehicle owners, the Assam government has announced the extension of its One Time Settlement (OTS) scheme under the Vehicle Scrappage Policy, 2022. The scheme, which was initially set to expire on March 31, 2025, will now remain in force till March 31, 2026.

The OTS scheme offers significant relief to owners who voluntarily surrender their vehicles for scrapping at a Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF). Under the provision, 75 per cent of the total outstanding dues, including motor vehicle tax, fitness fines and other liabilities, will be waived once the vehicle is scrapped at an authorized facility. The initiative not only supports the phasing out of polluting and unsafe vehicles but also provides a financial cushion to citizens struggling with accumulated dues.

Meanwhile, officials from the Transport Department explained that the decision follows directives from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, which has encouraged states to provide such incentives to fast-track the implementation of the national scrappage policy. Vehicle owners can apply online through vscrap.parivahan.gov.in to begin the scrapping process. Once a vehicle is dismantled, the RVSF issues a Certificate of Deposit (COD) and a Certificate of Vehicle Scrapping (CVS), which the owner must submit to the registering authority to ensure cancellation of the Registration Certificate (RC).

District Transport Officers across Assam, including Cachar, have urged citizens to take advantage of the scheme, emphasizing that it is a one-time opportunity for owners of ageing vehicles to regularize their status without bearing the heavy burden of pending liabilities. The move is also expected to free roads of outdated and unsafe vehicles, improve road safety, and contribute to a cleaner environment in line with the state’s commitment to sustainable mobility.

By extending the OTS till 2026, the government has signaled its intent to make the transition smoother for citizens while simultaneously advancing its larger goal of building a modern, eco-friendly transport ecosystem across Assam.

This is stated in a press release issued by Regional office of Information & Public Relations Barak valley Zone Silchar Assam.
