As Barak cross danger level, construction of sluice gate at Bethukandi going on in full swing
DC Jalli urged the people of Silchar not to panic
July 3: Due to incessant rainfall since the last few days, the water level of river Barak crossed the danger level on 18 June. However, after 13 days, at 3 PM on 1 July, the water level came down below danger level. But due to heavy rainfall on Saturday night, the water level of river Barak, started to rise once again and crossed the danger level at 9 PM on Sunday. From 1 AM on Sunday, the water level of Barak went up from 19.29 mt to 19.86 mt at 10 PM.
Meanwhile, the construction of Sluice Gate at Bethukandi is going on a war footing. This was stated by District Administration Cachar on Sunday evening. DC Cachar Keerthi Jalli urged upon the people of Silchar not to panic as the Bethukandi dyke is still safe. It needs mention that the man-made breach at Bethukandi resulted in the devastating flood in Silchar. Following this, DC Cachar came down heavily against the Executive Engineer of Irrigation Department and also threatened to put him behind the bars for slackness in construction.
It is a matter of grave concern and panic that this is for the third time since last month that river Barak at Annapurna Ghat crossed the danger level. Sources in the Water Resource Department informed that unless there is overtopping of water to a great extent, there would not be any fresh flood just by crossing the danger level of river Barak.
