No GST on properties rented to private or business persons for personal use & residence

Aug. 12: An information has been viral in the various social media platforms, where it was claimed that 18% GST has been imposed on house rent for tenants. However, the government later on clarified that this is fake information and no such decision has been taken to impose any GST on house rent.

The government on Friday issued a clarification as reports said that tenants would have to pay 18% GST on house rent. “Renting of a residential unit (is) taxable only when it is rented to a business entity,” clarified the government. It added that properties rented to private or business persons for personal use and residence would not attract any GST.
