Apprehension of breach of peace; Section 144 CrPC imposed in Karimganj
Oct. 29: Due to the recent incident in Bangladesh and Tripura as reported in the media, there is an ample apprehension of breach of public peace and tranquility, loss of human life and property due to public gathering for the aforementioned purpose. It is in this backdrop that Khageswar Pegu, in the capacity of District Magistrate imposed Section 144 in Karimganj district on 29 October, 2021.
Under 144 Cr.P.C. District Magistrate, Karimganj promulgated that no procession / rally / dharna / distribution of leaflets / banners and posters etc. attracting breach of public peace and tranquility will be allowed in Karimganj District. The order was passed ex-parte in the interest of public peace and tranquility and shall remain in force until further order. It was further stated that any violation of above order shall invite legal action Under Section 188 of IPC.
Meanwhile, earlier during the day, Karimganj Police stopped a rally brought out by the Popular Front of India at Badarpur in protest against attacks on minorities at Tripura. The rally was declared “illegal” as the organisers allegedly did not seek prior permission of the appropriate authority before taking out the rally. Following this incident, Section 144 was issued in Karimganj district.
