Ambubachi Mela in Guwahati Kamakhya Temple inaugurated
June 21: Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Culture and Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel inaugurated the Ambubachi Mela in Guwahati Kamakhya Temple on Friday. The four-day festival at the Kamakhya temple begins on Saturday with the temple doors closing at 9 pm and reopening after four days on June 26. The temple will remain closed to mark the belief that the annual menstrual cycle of Godedess Kamakhya falls Goddess Kamakhya falls during the period and is associated with the fertility cult.
While speaking at the inaugural programme of Ambubachi Mela at Sonaram High School Field at Guwahati, Chief Minister Sonowal said that all efforts had been taken to sustain the success of last three years’ in organising the Mela on a grand scale.
Meanwhile, the Kamrup (M) District Administration has constructed four camps for the lodging of the devotees visiting Ambubachi Mela that will start from June 22. The camps are situated in Pandu, Naharbari, Badipara and Fancy Bazar. From their lodging to water requirements, to medical facilities and especially the security, the district administration is arranging everything in a structured manner.
The Kamrup (M) District Administration has allotted more than 100 ASTC buses to transport devotees of Ambubachi Mela from their camps to the temple. These vehicles will be used to carry devotees from their camps at Pandu, Naharbari, Badipara and Fancy Bazaar to the base gate of Kamakhya temple during the festival.
Ambubachi Mela is one of the largest religious congregations that eastern India hosts atop the Nilachal hills in Guwahati. During this time, hundreds of visitors from across the country visit the temple to offer their prayers in the temple.
