Ahead of 3rd phase of Assam poll, EC transfers brother of HBS from post of SP Goalpara

April 3: In a significant development,  the Election Commission (EC) in a letter issued to the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of Assam asked  to transfer Assam BJP minister Himanta Biswa Sarma’s brother Sushanta Biswa Sarma from the post of Superintendent of Police (SP) of Goalpara district.

The EC in its letter issued on Friday wrote, “Veera Rakesh Reddy shall be posted as Superintendent of Police, Goalpara with immediate effect….  Sushanta Biswa Sarma shall be transferred to some suitable post in state headquarter.” Voters in Goalpara district will exercise their franchise in the third phase of the Assam Assembly election 2021 on April 6.

Earlier, the poll panel strongly condemned the “impugned” statements made by Himanta Biswa Sarma and barred him from holding any public meetings, public processions, public rallies, roadshows, interviews, and public utterances in media (electronic, print, social media) in connection with ongoing elections for 48 hours from immediate effect on April 02. Sarma won’t be able to take part in campaigning and related activities till April 4.
