April 19: Things are now assuming a very critical shape with Covid-19 cases gradually spreading among the college students under Assam University, Silchar. On 18 April, a TDC 1st semester student of Chemistry Honours was detected as corona positive in the midst of his ongoing odd semester examination. Another such disturbing news came in from NC Paul Memorial College, Silchar on Monday afternoon. A 3rd semester TDC (CBCS) course student of NC Paul College tested Covid-19 positive. She was detected positive in Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) at SM Dev Civil Hospital, Silchar on 19 April.

Though the TDC (CBCS) Odd Semester Examination has already started, yet her papers will commence from 22 April. She is supposed to appear in 4 pass papers (Philosophy-301, Political Science-301, Alternative English-301 and PHPSEC-301). Further, the girl has got two arrear papers of TDC 1st semster (Political Science-101 and English Communication), which also she would have to appear in the meantime. It needs mention here that the TDC students of NC Paul Memorial College appears in the exam at Radhamadhab College centre.

However, as she was detected Covid-19 positive on 19 April, she would have to undergo strict isolation for atleast 14 days, if not more. That means, she would not be able to come out of isolation till atleast 4 May. As such, it would not be possible on her part to appear for the ongoing offline TDC exam. The student was immensely upset. On one hand, she was suffering from pain due to Covid symptoms and on the other, she was totally demoralised for not being able to sit for the examination. She said, “Had there been the system of online mode of examination, my career would not have been in stake.”

On Sunday, when the student of GC College tested positive, the Controller of Examination of Assam University did not seem to be willing to take the remaining exams in online/ blended mode. However, with each passing day, the number of Covid cases are increasing and this has been a real cause of concern for both the teachers and the students. Concerned citizens have expressed the view that the college Principals and the University authorities must intervene immediately and devise ways and means to take the remaining exams in blended mode. It needs mention here that an Assistant Officer-in-charge (AOC) of the Exam section of Cachar College, tested COVID-19 positive in the midst of ongoing TDC (CBCS) Odd Semester Examination.
