After 7 years of Nirbhaya’s death, all 4 convicts to be hanged on 22 January

January 07: The four convicts in the 2012 Nirbhaya gang rape and murder case were all sentenced to death by a Delhi Court. Mukesh Singh, 32, Pawan Gupta, 25, Vinay Sharma, 26, and Akshay Kumar Singh, 31, will be executed together at Tihar jail at 7 am on 22 January 2020. As the judge pronounced the order, the courtroom was packed and thick with emotion. Nirbhaya’s parents as well as family members of the convicts wept.

On 16 December, 2012, Nirbhaya (fearless) and her friend had boarded the bus from south Delhi after a movie. The 23-year-old died days after she was raped on a moving bus, tortured with an iron rod and dumped on the road, naked and bleeding.

Besides these four, two more men were arrested by the police. Ram Singh allegedly committed suicide in jail and a juvenile was released from a reformation home after serving a three-year term.

“This judgement will reinforce people’s faith in the judiciary and empower women. My daughter will get justice,” said Nirbhaya’s mother.
