ACTA ardently appeals to the civil society to stand in solidarity with the teachers of Cachar College

way2barak, Sept.25: In view of the statewide agitation programme being organized by Assam College Teachers’ Association (ACTA) on 24 September, 2022 against the criminal assault and intimidation of the Teachers, non-teaching staff and members of the media at the behest of the principal, Cachar College, ACTA appealed to the civil society to stand in solidarity with the teachers of Cachar College.

Issuing a press release to this effect on Saturday, ACTA President Himangshu Maral and general Secretary Jayanta Baruah stated, “ACTA strongly condemn the physical assault and intimidation unleashed on the Teachers, non-teaching staff and members of the media by a handful of “student”
hooligans at the behest of the principal of Cachar College, Sri Siddhartha Sankar Nath on 21st September, 2022. This was a pre-planned criminal conspiracy hatched by the Principal with the evil objective of breaking the morale of the Teaching and Nonteaching staff who have shown their guts to stand against his dictatorial rule, administrative and financial irregularities and other countless misdeeds. This sinister and deplorable design of the Principal, Cachar College, to pit a section of the students against the ACTA has been foiled by the students themselves. A large number of students have come out in the open on their own and stood by their ‘Gurus’ at this hour of crisis.”

“The agitation launched by the ACTA, Cachar College Unit demanding the ouster of the Principal, Dr Siddhartha Sankar Nath, has reached the third day today. ACTA has called upon all its esteemed members throughout the State to joined their hand for standing strongly by our Cachar College colleagues for the sake of salvaging the dignity and sanctity not only of Higher Education but also the whole Teaching Community of Assam,” wrote the President and General Secretary of ACTA.

As the Cachar College teachers under the banner of ACTA have been battling for restoration of their ‘legitimate rights’, ACTA Units all over Assam have joined the agitation in solidarity with their Cachar College brethren. ACTA members in all the Provincialised colleges of the State have come out wearing black badge in support of the demand for removal of the Principal, Cachar College. Hundreds of emails have been sent on 24 September from the ACTA Units across Assam to the Chief Minister with copies to the Education Minister and the Director of Higher Education (DHE) seeking his intervention. “Additionally, the demands include removal of the inefficient GB president and strong legal action against the few “student” hooligans who are being used by the principal in execution of his nefarious designs,” wrote ACTA in the press release.

The press statement issued by Himangshu Maral and Dr Jayanta Baruah further stated, “In order to bring back academic ambience, healthy relation among teachers and students and lawful functioning of the College administration, ACTA has demanded removal of the present Principal as the one and only way out of the present crisis. We have also demanded the replacement of the present Governing Body’s president who being a retired banker and not at all familiar with the functioning of an institution of Higher Education, have remained a mute spectator to the mayhem created by the principal. As such, we demand that an academician as per govt rules should replace the present President of the GB of Cachar College. At a time when the Department of Higher Education under direct supervision of the able Education Minister, Dr Ranoj Pegu, and guidance from the dynamic Chief Minister, Dr
Himanta Biswa Sharma, is doing everything to take higher education to the next level, Cachar College is going astray under a whimsical and rule-defying Principal.”

In view of the above, ACTA ardently appealed to the civil society, organizations, various employees’ associations and media friends to stand in solidarity with the teachers of Cachar College for the sake of safeguarding the sanctity and dignity of Higher Education in Assam! “Save Cachar College! Save Higher Education! ACTA Long Live!,” stated the President and General Secretary of ACTA.
