AASU to launch door-to-door campaign against Citizenship Amendment Bill
November 12: All Assam Students’ Association (AASU) along with 28 ethnic organizations has taken in hand a unique way of registering their protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016. They were highly critical of the move of the Union Government to pass the said bill in the winter session of the Parliament. In order to mould the opinion of the lawmakers, they have planned to visiting ministers, MLAs and MPs of the State at their respective residences from Sunday in a bid to garner their support against the Centre’s move to pass the said bill.
A massive rally in support of their demands was also taken out at Dispur on Thursday by the AASU and 28 ethnic organizations. Further, the indigenous organizations have also planned to take out a torch light rally across the State on November 16 against the Citizenship Bill. AASU has assured to lend full support to these organizations.
AASU president Dipanka Kumar Nath said that AASU will definitely try to convince the public representatives during their house-to-house campaign about the disastrous effect that the indigenous people of Assam will have to face in case the Citizenship Bill is passed. He asserted that, if the state government does not change its stand on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, then they will be compelled to launch a vigorous agitation.
Further, the 28 ethnic organizations has also planned to convince the ministers, MLAs and MPs to put pressure on the Centre to scrap the Foreigners (Amendment) Order, 2015; the Passport (Entry into India) Amendment Rules, 2015 and the proposed long-term visas to people from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.
