A big wicket down for Congress: Sushmita Dev resigns

ওয়েটুবরাক, 16 আগস্টঃ প্রাক্তন সাংসদ, মহিলা কংগ্রেসের সর্বভারতীয় সভাপতি সুস্মিতা দেব কংগ্রেস ছেড়েছেন। রবিবার তিনি কংগ্রেস সভাপতি সোনিয়া গান্ধীকে চিঠি লিখে দলের প্রাথমিক সদস্যপদ ত্যাগের কথা জানিয়েছেন। এর পরই টুইটার হ্যান্ডেলে নিজের পরিচয় লিখেন, প্রাক্তন কংগ্রেস সদস্য। তাঁর এই দলত্যাগের খবরে শুধু বরাক উপত্যকা বা আসাম নয়, দেশ জুড়ে চাঞ্চল্য ছড়িয়েছে। উপত্যকার কংগ্রেস কর্মী-নেতাদের মধ্যে হতাশা দেখা দিয়েছে।

তবে কংগ্রেস ছাড়লেও তিনি যে রাজনীতি ছাড়ছেন না, সোনিয়া গান্ধীর চিঠিতেই এর উল্লেখ রয়েছে। সুস্মিতা লিখেছেন, এখন তিনি নতুন করে জনগণের সেবায় নিয়োজিত হবেন। এতদিন ধরে তাঁকে পরামর্শ দিয়ে সঙ্গে থাকার জন্য কংগ্রেসের পদাধিকারী ও সাধারণ সদস্য সকলের প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করেন সন্তোষকন্যা।

নিজে এখনও মুখ না খুললেও এটা মোটামুটি নিশ্চিত, সুস্মিতা দেব তৃণমূল কংগ্রেসে যোগ দিচ্ছেন। তাঁকে মানস ভুঁইয়ার ফাঁকা আসনে রাজ্যসভার সদস্য করে ত্রিপুরায় নেতৃত্ব দেওয়ার জন্য পাঠানো হতে চলেছে। তেইশের নির্বাচনের আগে ত্রিপুরায় একটা ফেসের খুব দরকার হয়ে পড়েছিল। এখন সুস্মিতা দেবই হবেন ত্রিপুরা তৃণমূলের প্রধান মুখ।

Aug. 16: In what seems to be a bolt from the blue for the Congress is that former MP and the President of All India Mahila Congress, Sushmita Dev has severed her ties with the party. In a letter addressed to the Congress President Sonai Gandhi on Sunday, Sushmita Dev tendered her resignation from the primary membership of the Congress. Soon after that, she changed her bio in both her Twitter account and Facebook Page.

In the letter addressed to Sonai Gandhi, Sushmita Dev wrote, “Please treat this letter as my resignation from the primary membership of the Indian National Congress. I cherish my three- decade long association with the Indian National Congress. May I take this opportunity to thank the party, all its leaders, members and workers who have been a part of my memorable journey.”

“Madam, I thank you personally, for your guidance and the opportunities you gave me. I value the enriching experience. I hope I have your good wishes as I begin a new chapter in my life of public service,” added Ms Dev.

As soon as this news came in public domain, this became the most talked about subject not only in Barak Valley but also in the political corridors of Assam and India. Congress workers and leaders in Barak Valley also seems to be demoralised and refrained from making any initial comments on this issue. Sushmita Dev after changing her bio in her social media handle, switched off her phone.

However, though she gave divorce to Congress, yet she was not leaving politics. This was mentioned by Sushmita herself in her resignation letter, where she wrote, “I hope I have your good wishes as I begin a new chapter in my life of public service.” Now, this has given birth to various speculations in the political circles.

Will she now join the BJP as has been the trend? Probably a big “No”. Though she has not said anything on her future political life , yet this is almost final that Sushmita Dev is going to join Trinamool Congress (TMC). If sources are to be trusted, then Sushmita already had a detailed discussion in this regard with TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee. Sushmita has been assured a seat in the Rajya Sabha, which was vacant after Manas Bhuiya. TMC will in all probability project Sushmita Dev as the Chief Ministerial face of Tripura and send her there to spread further the wings of the party before the Assembly polls of 2023. In all probability, Sushmita Dev is expected to spell out her future course of action very soon.
