10 new commando battalions & additional manpower for 2 shifts at police stations in Assam: CM

June 9: Assam Chief Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma attended the first ever Assam Police SPs Conference held in Kaziranga on Wednesday. During the day-long conference, a slew of decisions were taken for the overall welfare of police personnel in Assam. Taking to his twitter handle, the Chief Minister wrote, “A meaningful day of constructive deliberations on policing and how to make Assam as among the best states in internal security. Held wide-ranging discussions with @DGPAssamPolice & SPs of @assampolice.”

. The important decisions taken during the day are:

  • As many as 10 new police commando battalions will be raised in the State soon. These ten new police commando battalions will be raised in lines of the Country’s elite commando force – National Security Guards. (NSG).
  • Two shifts duty at all police stations to be introduced to reduce the workload on police personnel.
  • 23,000 civil police personnel and 12,000 commando police personnel will be added to the system.
  • Taking into consideration the welfare of police personnel, police quarters will be constructed.
  • Recruitment rules for appointment into police forces will be modified to bring in more professionally qualified and skilled manpower into the system.
  •  7 new Forensic Labs would be set up in the State, which will boost police’s investigation process in cases.
  • Annual health check up for all police personnel and officials would be introduced.
  • A compulsory 1 month leave would be granted to all personnel serving in different police battalions in the State “to spend time with their families”

Meanwhile, Assam Director General of Police Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta on Wednesday said that henceforth the police personnel will have eight hours of work shift. Moreover, the police department will function in two shifts to reduce the work load of the personnel. Addressing a press meet on speeding up investigations and reviving the police force, the DGP said that Assam Police is undergoing a massive transformation and will soon be revived.
