Barbaric assault of a doctor: Amid protests throughout the state, Assam Police nabs 24 persons

June 2: As a reaction on the inhuman physical assault upon a junior doctor by the patient party on Tuesday in a Covid Care Centre at Hojai in Assam, 24 persons were arrested. Assam Chief Minister, Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma took a strong stand on Tuesday night and directed Assam Police to nab the culprits associated with this heinous incident. While vising the ailing junior doctor in the hospital, Health Minister Keshab Mahanta too gave a strong indication of nabbing those who assaulted the Dr Seuj Kumar Senapati.

Taking to his twitter handle on Wednesday morning, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta informed, “UPDATE on the barbaric attack on Dr Senapati posted in Udali. @Hojai_Police has rounded up 24 people involved in the attack. A strong case is being made against them. Like we said yday, no attack on #FrontlineWarriors will be tolerated.”

“24 culprits involved in this barbaric attack have been arrested and the charge sheet will be filed at the earliest. I am personally monitoring this investigation and I promise that justice will be served,” tweeted the Chief Minister. He also provided the list of the 24 persons who were arrested by the police.

The arrested persons have been identified as: 1) Md Kamaruddin 2) Md Jainal uddin 3) Rehanuddin 4) Saidul Alam 5) Rahim Uddin 6) Rajul Islam 7) Tayebur Rahman 8) Sahil Islam 9) Rahimuddin 10) Abdul Kalam 11) Nurzul Islam 12) Abdul Gumi 13) Dilwar Hussain 14) Abdul Hussain 15) Anuwar Hussain 16) Ikramul Hussain 17) Nasirrudin 18) Alimuddin 19) Jamil Ahmad 20) Sarifuddin 21) Safiquddin 22) Mofizur Rahman 23) Matibur Rahman 24) Misba Begum.

Meanwhile, the assault on an on-duty doctor has evoked strong condemnation from across the State. Junior Doctors’ Association of the Jorhat Medical College and Hospital (JMCH), Doctors at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital(GMCH), Assam State Branch of the Indian Medical Association and many others from the medical fraternity took to protest against this brutal incident.

On Tuesday, a video surfaced on Social Networking Sites where it was seen how a group of angry mob after partially vandalizing Fultali Hospital assaulted Dr. Seuj Kr Senapati. The doctor posted at Fultali Model Hospital under Lanka Police Station in central Assam’s Hojai district was assaulted by a group of Covid attendants while he was on his Covid Duty over the death of a patient.
