Amit Shah’s “Congress shamed democracy” tweet sharply criticised by Sushmita Dev

Nov. 5: Following the arrest of Republic Media Network’s Editor-in-Chief Arnab Goswami from his residence in Mumbai on Wednesday, several Union ministers and senior BJP leaders have criticised the Congress and called it an “attack on freedom of press”. Union Home Minister Amit Shah in a tweet on Wednesday wrote, “Congress and its allies have shamed democracy once again. Blatant misuse of state power against Republic TV and Arnab Goswami is an attack on individual freedom and the 4th pillar of democracy. It reminds us of the Emergency. This attack on free press must be and WILL BE OPPOSED.”

Former Silchar MP and President of All India Mahila Congress, Sushmita Dev took a sharp dig at the tweet of Home Minister Amit Shah. Taking to her twitter handle, Ms Dev wrote, “At least @AmitShah ji is reminded of concepts like democracy and freedom except it is for the wrong reason.” Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate said she was actually very shocked with the “selective outrage” of the BJP of the sections of the government.

Arnab Goswami was sent to judicial custody for 14 days by a court in Alibaug, Raigad in Maharashtra over an alleged “abetment of suicide” of an interior designer in 2018. Two others, named in the suicide note,  Feroz Shaikh and Nitesh Sarda were also sent for 14 days judicial custody by Alibaug District Magistrate Court in connection with Anvay Naik suicide case. The court gave the ruling late in the night on Wednesday.
