‘RUPAM’ writes to DC Cachar, demands electric furnace at Silchar crematorium

September 3: The 1st electric furnace in Barak Valley was installed recently in Karimganj town. However, such a proposal for constructing an electric furnace at Silchar crematorium (Smashan Road) was in the air for some time. However, with the passage of time, the proposal went behind the sight. On Wednesday, “RUPAM Cultural Organization”, one of the oldest Cultural Organization of this region wrote to the Deputy Commissioner, Cachar wherein they raised the demand of an electric furnace within the premises of Silchar crematorium at at Smashan Road, Subhash Nagar.

Nikhil Paul, General Secretary of Rupam in the letter addressed to DC Cachar wrote, “Silchar cremation ground at Smashan Road, Subhash Nagar in dire need of an Electric Furnace for the cremation work and need to be installed at the earliest. Silchar Municipal Board, as learnt, has approved an amount of Rs. 2.5 crores for the construction of said furnace from the CIDF fund. Simultaneously, the said proposal of construction of electric furnace at Karimganj Town was also initiated. But unfortunately, the process of installation work of the said electric furnace at Silchar is yet to be initiated, whereas the electric furnace at Karimganj Town has already been installed.”

Rupam questioned the reason behind this inordinate delay in installation of the said electric furnace at Silchar cremation ground, which they pointed has ultimately given birth to resentment among the people. It is in this context, that they urged upon the Deputy Commissioner to take immediate action so that this project can see the light of the day without any further delay.

The copy of the said letter addressed to the Deputy Commissioner was also sent to the Secretary Urban Development, Dispur; Silchar MP Dr. Rajdeep Roy, MLA Silchar Dilip Kumar Paul and to the Executive Officer, SMB for information and necessary action.
