Barak Valley registers 65 corona positive cases & 2 deaths on Thursday

July 23: The number of coronavirus positive cases are on the rise in Barak Valley along with the rest of Assam. However, on Tursday, the number of fresh cases were quite less in the valley. A total of 65 new COVID-19 positive cases were detected from the three districts of Barak Valley. Further, a total of 62 patients were discharged from the three districts of the Valley on Thursday.

There was much speculation in Cachar regarding imposition of lockdown in the district throughout the day. However, after a meeting with the leading citizens, Deputy Commissioner Keerthi Jalli clarified that as of now, lockdown will not be imposed in Cachar. She said, “Today we had a detailed discussion with the leading citizens of Silchar wherein the Silchar MP, MLA’s were also present. After a threadbare discussion, it was resolved that till now many daily labourers were affected much by the 1st lockdown. The economy and the business also went much down. Considering all these facts and based on the district administration’s preparation, it was recommended by the entire house that lockdown shall not be declared in this week. We will analyse the situation in the coming days and if the scenario gets deteriorated, then again we will review and take a mutual decision.”

Here is the district-wise break up of fresh COVID-19 positive cases detected on Thursday in Barak Valley:

  • Cachar: 47 positive cases
  • Karimganj: 09 positive cases
  • Hailakandi: 09 positive cases

It needs mention here that Karimganj district recorded deaths of two COVID-19 patients, out of which one was regarded by the Death Audit Board as due to coronavirus. The deceased were identified as Shamim Ahmed and Kiran Shankar Das. This is the 1st official COVID death in Karimganj. As of now, 433 corona positive cases were reported from Karimganj, out of which, 350 have been released and 83 of them are active.

Nine fresh COVID-19 positive cases have been reported from Hailakandi district on Thursday, taking the total tally to 778. 41 persons on being cured have been discharged from hospitals on Thursday, taking the total number of persons released to 568. The number of active cases in the district is presently 208.

Apart from the valley, a total of 1047 persons tested positive in Assam on Thursday, thereby taking the state tally to 28,791. As of now, there are 7936 active cases in the state. Meanwhile, 1349 patients were also discharged from across the state during the day. With this, a total of 20,699 persons were discharged in Assam. Moreover, during the day, 4 persons died due to COVID-19 in Assam, thereby taking the death tally to 70.
