After Jharkhand, women in Assam too perform ‘Corona Devi Puja’!

June 8: In this digital age, there are still many people who believes in many unnatural aspects of appeasing those forces which are beyond the level of human comprehension. The outbreak of novel coronavirus has baffled not only the people at large but also the scientists who are busy in finding out a effective vaccine to eradicate it. However, still now no major breakthrough has been achieved in this regard. Meanwhile, last week a large number of women gathered in different places of Jharkhand to appease “Corona Maiya”. After Jharkhand, reports have come in about women worshiping the deadly new virus as a ‘Goddess’ or ‘Devi’.

In a bid to get rid of the deadly coronavirus, women in Assam involved in ‘Corona Devi Puja’ in Assam. They believe that it is the only way to put an end of the deadly coronavirus pandemic. The number of coronavirus cases in Assam is increasing by leaps and bounds. Till Monday evening, the total number of COVID-19 cases in Assam went upto 2776, out of which, 2104 were active cases.

Probably the rising numbers has increased fear among the people, which led them to offer puja to ‘Corona Ma.’ As per a report by News18.com, from Biswanath Chariali to Darrang district and even in Assam’s main city of Guwahati, women, in some places accompanied by men too, have been performing “Corona Devi Puja” on the bank of the rivers or in temples and under big trees. In another report by the New Indian Express, it was reported that, “Some believed COVID-19 was the creation of goddess “Shitala”. In some Indian societies, people relate the infectious diseases, such as smallpox, to Shitala and offer prayers to the goddess to get relief.”

However, many in the state refuted this news published by some leading daily newspapers and termed is as baseless. Taking to social media, some even claimed that same pictures were used by these news sites to depict the so-called ‘corona puja’ held in Jharkhand and reportedly in Assam were the same!
