His yeoman service towards humanity did not escape the eyes of the Prime Minister. On Sunday, PM Narendra Modi in his Maan Ki Baat programme appreciated the efforts of Goutam Das. When the state CM Biplab Kumar Deb asked people to donate food and essential supplies for the poor in their respective localities and do the holy work of feeding the needy, Goutam Das was very much touched by this appeal. Since then, he started purchasing rice and pulses out of his paltry savings and daily earnings. Das earns around Rs.200 a day from his work of cart pulling.

Goutam Das lives all by himself in a tiny mud house at Sadhutilla village near capital city of Agartala. His wife died many years ago and his children live separately. The nationwide lockdown augmented by the outbreak of coronavirus had a great impact on Das who could see hungry faces all around in the absence of work. It was since then that this daily wage earner started to pack rice and pulses and go on distributing the same among the poor in his cart.
Though he felt excited to listen to the Prime Minister mentioning his name, but that was not what Das was aiming for. “My income is less. I am a poor man. But whatever little I have, I want to share with those who are much deprived that me,” said Goutam Das.
Such real life stories of good Samaritan are definitely inspiring for a materialistic society we are inhabiting. Such kind gesture usually go unnoticed because people like Goutam Das cannot afford to click selfies and upload them in social media. However, good deeds hardly goes unnoticed. The Prime Minister appreciating Das and the Chief Minister felicitating him for his yeomen service would definitely inspire him and such others to move ahead in life.
