Prof. Richard Mackenzie from Canada delivers lecture in Assam University

January 24: A colloquium was held on 24 January, 2020 at the Department of Physics, Assam University, Silchar. The speaker was Prof. Richard Mackenzie from the Department of Physics, University of Montreal, Canada.

The Ministry of Human Resource and Development (MHRD) had authorized Shastri Institute to manage Canadian component of GIAN programme by disseminating and promoting the programme in Canada. Under this programme, Prof. Richard Mackenzie, Professor of Physics, University of Montreal, Canada, has been visiting different Indian institutes/universities since last week of December 2019. In Northeast India, he is visiting only one University which is Assam University, Silchar.

The colloquium was chaired by Prof Asoke Kumar Sen of Dept of Physics, Assam University. Prof Mackenzie was felicitated by the Head of the Department Prof Atri Deshamukhya. The dignitaries present in the meeting were Prof C R Bhattacharjee (Dean School of Physical Sciences), Prof B I Sharma, Dr. Himadri S. Das, Dr. P. K. Shukla, Dr. M. Baro, Dr. A. S. Devi and others.

The title of his talk was “Symmetry and solitons: from kinks to magnetic monopoles”. There was a good interaction between students and faculty of the department. Later, Prof Mackenzie told that he was mesmerized with the beauty of this region and would like to visit this place in the future. He discussed with faculty about possible research collaboration with the University of Montreal in the future. The colloquium was conducted by Dr. Himadri Sekhar Das from the same department.
