Calcutta High Court directs West Bengal govt to remove all anti-CAA & NRC advertisements
নাগরিকত্ব আইন ও এনআরসি বিরোধী বিজ্ঞাপন বন্ধ করতে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকারকে নির্দেশ কলকাতা হাইকোর্টের

December 23: The Calcutta High Court on Monday directed the West Bengal government to remove all anti-Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and anti-National Register of Citizens (NRC) advertisements from public platforms. The Calcutta High Court directed the West Bengal government to stop all government advertisements that say the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will not be implemented in the state. The court has posted the matter for January 9, 2020, for further hearing.

As many as four petitions relating to the advertisement, CAA and NRC have so far been filed at the Calcutta high court. One of the petitioners even questioned how can Mamata Banerjee, in her capacity as chief minister, declare that CAA will not be implemented in her state. The court also sought a detailed response from the state government about the petitioners’ claim that campaign against the CAA was carried out using public money.

This is a huge jolt to the TMC chief Mamata Banerjee who has been protesting against the amended citizenship law and proposed nationwide NRC. CM Banerjee has announced that she will not implement either of the two — citizenship law and NRC.
