বেতন নেই, আত্মহত্যা করলেন কাগজ কলের অফিসার
55th death: HPC employee commits suicide being deprived of salary for 28 months

২৯ এপ্রিলঃ ২৯ মাস ধরে বেতন নেই অসমের কাগজ কলগুলিতে। স্ত্রী-সন্তানদের নিয়ে সংসার সামলাতে হিমসিম খেয়ে প্রাণ দিলেন নগাঁও কাগজ কলের ইউটিলিটি ম্যানেজার বিশ্বজিত মজুমদার। সোমবার হোস্টেল-রুমে ঝুলন্ত অবস্থায় তাঁর মৃতদেহ উদ্ধার হয়। পশ্চিমবঙ্গের কালনার বাসিন্দা বিশ্বজিতবাবু মেকানিক্যাল ইঞ্জিনিয়ারিংয়ে ডিগ্রি নিয়ে কাগজ কলে চাকরিতে যোগ দিয়েছিলেন। তাঁর আত্মহত্যার ঘটনায় কাগজকল কর্মীদের মধ্যে তীব্র উদ্বেগ, উতকণ্ঠা দেখা দিয়েছে।

তাঁরা বলেন, আমরা কি এখন শুধু মৃত্যু সংবাদের অপেক্ষাতেই থাকব? একদিকে, কংগ্রেস আমলে কিছু অফিসার ও ইউনিয়ন নেতার মিলদুটি লুটেপুটে খাওয়ার অভিযোগ, অন্যদিকে বিজেপি আমলে প্রতিশ্রুতি দিয়েও মিলটি চালু না করায় বেতনহীন কর্মীরা একে একে মৃত্যুর দিকে এগিয়ে চলেছেন। তার পরেও রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর মধ্যে কোনও হেলদোল নেই বলে অভিযোগ করেন তাঁরা।

April 29: On April 16, HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee appealed to the government to construct ‘gas chamber’ and kill all workers & their dependents of HPC Paper Mills of Panchgram and Nagaon as Hitler did to kill the Jews. They said that it’s better to die at one stroke than to get killed everyday in abject poverty without getting salary for more than 2 years. Within a fortnight of this statement two more deaths were witnessed by the paper mill employees.

On 28 April, 2019, an employee of HPC, Panchgram, Partha Deb expired at his quarter at Panchgram, Assam. He was suffering from hyperglycemia and liver disorder. He was not able to get any better treatment due to financial crunch as they were devoid of salary for the last 28 months.

Again, on 29 April, 2019, Biswajit Mazumdar, a 55-year-old official of the distribution branch of Nagaon Paper Mill situated at Jagiroad committed suicide after allegedly being deprived of the monthly salaries for 28 months. Police recovered the partly decomposed body of the employee hanging from the ceiling on Monday from room no 6 of the Senior Hostel. The incident came to light when his colleague did not find him over the phone despite repeated calls. Later, police sent the body of the deceased to the Morigaon Civil Hospital for post mortem examination.

All the employees of Nagaon and Cachar Paper Mills, two units of state-owned Hindustan Paper Corporation Limited (HPCL) have not been getting their salaries for more than two years. While production at Cachar Paper Mill, Panchgram stopped on 20 October, 2015, the Nagaon Paper Mill at Jagiroad was closed on 13 March, 2017.

Speaking to way2barak, Manabendra Chakraborty Chief Convenor of HPC Paper Mills Revival Action Committee said that the death toll of the paper mill employees have now reached to 55. “We are now at the apathy of the government. We have no way out but to wait to see our other colleagues and their dependents dying one after another. None from the government even showed the minimum courtesy to meet the families of the deceased,” said Mr. Chakraborty.
