Section 144 imposed at Hailakandi apprehending disturbance during polls

April 16: Section 144 CrPC has been promulgated in the entire district of Hailakandi. The order has come into force from 5 pm on Tuesday and will continue till April 19. Deputy Commissioner of Hailakandi Keerthi Jalli said that in view of reports of likelihood of disturbance in connection with ensuing parliamentary elections, Section 144 CrPC was imposed. The order issued by the Deputy Commissioner further stated that anyone violating the order will be dealt with strictly as per provisions of IPC.

Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) of 1973 empowers an executive magistrate to prohibit an assembly of five or more persons in an area. It also prohibits carrying of fire arms and weapons, bursting of fire crackers, holding of public meetings, procession, dharna and rallies.
