Gauhati HC granted bail to Mizo gospel singer

way2barak, Oct 11: The Gauhati High Court on Monday granted interim bail to renowned Mizo gospel singer Bethsy Lalrinsangi and her husband, Lalhriatpuia Chawngthu, a BCM-recognised evangelist, who were accused of forceful religious conversion during a gospel meeting in Assam.

The couple allegedly attempted to convert children during an event at Mount Olive School in Kokrajhar district. The accusations emerged after a case was filed at Kazigaon police station based on an FIR lodged by members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Additional allegations also surfaced against other individuals linked to the incident.

Justice Arun Dev Choudhury granted the couple interim bail on Tuesday, instructing them to appear before the Assam police within ten days to record their statements. Earlier, the Kokrajhar District Court had rejected their initial bail plea, which led to the high court petition.

Advocate Vikram Rajkhowa represented the couple in the high court. The case has ignited a broader debate on religious freedom in Assam, raising concerns about the boundaries of religious ac- tivities and conversions.
