Scientist Samir Bhattacharya in Cachar College, highlights the need for research in Health sciences
way2barak, 16 Nov : An invited lecture programme was organized by the Department of Zoology, Cachar College, Silchar on 16th November, 2023. The programme was graced by Prof. Samir Bhattacharya, former Director CSIR-IICB (Indian Institute of Chemical Biology), Jadavpur, Kolkata and an eminent Scientist and Professor associated with Indian National Science Academy (INSA), and School of Life Science, Visva Bharati University, Santiniketan, West Bengal.
Prof Bhattacharya highlighted the need for research in the area of Health sciences and stressed on the important role of biologists in contributing in the field of clinical research alongside medical practitioners and clinicians. He also discussed about some of the important findings that have changed the course of clinical biology, ultimately leading to the development of medications and medicinal compounds. He urged the students and the faculties of Cachar College to take up scientific initiatives through which outcomes of biomedical research such as herbal medicines or newly developed medicinal compounds may be made available to the needy. After his insightful presentation, students and faculty members participated in group discussion and interaction with Prof. Bhattacharya.
Prof. Bhattacharya has around 5167 citations as per record from ResearchGate. He is the recipient of various fellowships and awards Nationally and Internationally and has many patents in his name. He was the Vice-president of Indian National Science Academy (2003) and holds numerous chairs across various institutions of the world.
Prof. Bhattacharya was accompanied by Dr. Sanat Ranjan Datta, Associate Professor (retd) and former Head, Department of Zoology, Cachar College, Silchar. Dr. Datta happens to be the student of Prof. Bhattacharya in his Master degree and Ph.D. curricula. Dr. Nilam Basumatary, Academic Vice-Principal and Head, Department of Zoology, Cachar College welcomed the dignitaries followed by introductory speech of Dr. Datta who acknowledged the immense contribution of Prof. Bhattacharya in the field of science and technology globally. At the end of the session, Dr. Nitu Debnath delivered the vote of thanks. The overall programme was hosted by Meghadeepa Deb, Lecturer, Department of Zoology, Cachar College, Silchar and managed by the faculty members and non-teaching staffs of Zoology department. The programme was attended by teachers of various departments and students across the semesters. The program concluded with National Anthem.
