World Menstrual Hygiene Day observed by Govt. Model College, Borkhola

Way2barak, May 28 : Govt. Model College, Borkhola observed World Menstrual Hygiene Day with an awareness lecture and donation Programme at Saraswati Vidyaniketan, Jarailtola, Cachar on 27th May. The extension activity was organized by the Women’s Cell of Govt. Model College, Borkhola jointly with the NSS Cell and IQAC in collaboration with the NGO Paavan.

Dr. Abdul Bareque, SDMO, Bikrampur, BPHC was invited as the speaker for the awareness lecture on menstrual health and hygiene maintenance among some female students of Saraswati Vidyaniketan. The programme began with the lighting of the lamp by Dr. Bareque followed by the welcome address of Suroshikha Debnath, Coordinator, Women’s Cell of the college. She explained the origin and mission of celebrating World Menstrual Hygiene Day and highlighted the importance of spreading awareness on menstrual health as menstruation is still considered a taboo in many spheres.

After that, the Chief Guest was felicitated by the IQAC coordinator Dr. Mofidur Rahman. The Secretary of the school, Ranjan Goswami shared his thoughts after felicitation by the NSS coordinator Dr. Shalim Hussain. The resource person Dr. Bareque began his insightful lecture with a demonstration of the scientific process of menstruation. He highlighted that periods is as natural as any other biological change in the body and made a plea to shun all societal taboos on it.

He asked the students not to consider menstruation as a disease and miss school on those days. He also made the school administration aware of maintaining proper sanitation facilities for the girls. Besides that, he elaborated on the ways to maintain proper female health through proper nutrition and good eating habits.

The awareness talk was followed by an interactive session with the school students where two students asked their queries on menstrual issues. At the end, Janaushaadi sanitary napkins along with some sweets were donated among 45 female students of the school by the NGO Paavan from Silchar. Its member Anindita Nandi spread awareness about the availability of cost friendly sanitary napkins offered at Pradhaan Mantri Bharatiya Janaushaadi Kendras so that the girls could make a healthy shift from the use of clothes to napkins. The vote of thanks was delivered by Nirupama Chanda, a teacher of the school.
