Centre contemplating punitive action against IPS officers of West Bengal

February 7: The central government is contemplating to take strict measures against 5 IPS officers of the West Bengal cadre. The officers had participated in a sit-in dharna with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on February 4.

The five officers, apart from Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar who particpated in the sit-in are Virendra (1985 batch), DGP W.B; ADG Director-Security Vineet Kumar Goel (1994 batch); ADG Law and Order Anuj Sharma (1991 batch); Commissioner of Police (Bidhannagar) Gyanwant Singh (1993), who was in uniform; and Additional Commissioner of Police Supratim Sarkar (1997).

The action may include stripping off meritorious awards and debar them from being empanelled for Central deputation, reported The Times of India. The Centre is contemplating on issuing an advisory to all the States to ensure that officers of uniformed forces adhere to the AIS conduct rules and maintain decorum.
