Land dispute: 1 killed, 2 injured; aggrieved mob burn houses of accused at Katigorah

June 10: Amid torrential rains, a man was murdered in a field on the issue of land dispute. This gave rise to anger among the people of the locality. In return, the houses of the alleged accused were set on fire. The flames even engulfed the domesticated animals. The animality exhibited by human beings caused immense sufferings even to the domestic animals.

The incident took place at a place called Burunga in Katigorah constituency of Cachar district under Bihara Police Out Post (under Kalain Police Station). On Friday morning, this severe incident occurred. On the issue of land dispute, started verbal abuses between two groups in a rice field. Soon the verbal abuses assumed a more severe turn and it resulted in physical abuse. As a result, Ajir Uddin Barbhuiya of Burunga Part-II was killed, whereas, two of his brothers, Safikur Rahman Barbhuiya (55) and Habibur Rahman Barbhuiya (45) were severely injured.

This was enough to invite the wrath of the people of that village. As per sources, a long standing land dispute between the members of the same extended family resulted in this ugly episode on Friday. It was further alleged that the accused after killing one and injuring two more with sharp weapons then went and threatened and abused the family members of the victim.

On getting information, police forces reached the spot at 7 AM on Friday and took stock of the incident. However, it was learnt that after the police went away, the agitated mob out of anger set the houses of the alleged accused on fire. As the entrance to these houses set ablaze was too narrow so the fire brigades were unable to reach the spot. Finally, after around 2 hours police forces reached the spot and tried to douse the flames with buckets of water.
