World Environment Day observed by various organisations & institutions in Cachar

June 5: The World Environment Day is celebrated on June 5 of each year with the aim to mark the importance of nature and raise awareness for its protection. Each year, the programme is organised around a specific theme to mark the importance of the day. This year World Environment Day is celebrated with the “Only One Earth” theme which was also the first-ever theme and the programme is hosted by Sweden. World Environment Day programme is United Nations’ principal platform to raise awareness on issues that are threats to the environment.

World Environment Day (June 5) was established in 1972 by the United Nations (UN) at the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment followed by the first celebration to mark the day in 1974 in the US with the theme – only one Earth.

Along with rest of the globe, World Environment Day was also celebrated in a befitting manner by various organisations & institutions in Cachar.

Radhamadhab College, Silchar: As part of the World Environment Day, an awareness campaign on “Climate Change & a Climate Resilient Society” was organised by the NSS Unit of the college. Guest Speaker from the Department of Ecology, Assam University delivered a talk on this occasion. This was followed by plantation of saplings in the college premises by the students and teachers. Present during the occasion were Dr Debashish Roy, Principal of the College, NSS Programme Officer, Dr Ch Mani Kumar Singh, IQAC Coordinator Arunabha Bhattacharjee among others.

Sammilito Sanskritik Mancha, Silchar: The SSM in collaboration with Dear Boys Club of Hailakandi Road, Silchar observed the World Environment Day in a befitting manner on 5 June. A plantation drive was undertaken by them, which was attended by Padma Shri Dr Ravi Kannan. Other dignitaries who graced the occasion and took part in the plantation drive were Prof Parthankar Choudhury of Assam University, Dr Ritesh Tapkire, Kalyan Chakraborty, Lutfar Rahman Laskar, Thomas among others. Saplings were given as token of presentations to the invited guests. On behalf of Sammilito Sanskritik Mancha, its President Sekhar Debroy, Subir Bhattacharjee, Manoj Deb, Joydeep Chakraborty, Santosh Chandra among others were present. Later on, a health camp wwas also organised by the Mancha at Ghoniwala Sashan Kalibari.

Women’s College, Silchar: NSS Unit and IQAC of Women’s College, Silchar observed the World Environment Day in the college premises in collaboration with Rotary Club of Silchar. Saplings were planted in the college by the students. This was followed by a meeting where Principal of the college, Dr Manoj Kumar Paul, Rtn. Taimur Raja Choudhury and faculty member Debasmita Biswas spoke on the protection of our environment.

G.C. College, Silchar: The World Environment Day was also observed amidst a host of events by the students and faculty members of GC College. The Departments of Botany, Ecology & Environment Science atively participated in the programme.

Assam University, SIlchar: Department of Ecology and Environmental Science and Forest Department, Govt. of Assam jointly celebrated the World Environment Day-2022 The inaugural programme was organized in the conference hall of the Ecology and Environmental Science department. today at 10.00 am. Prof. Ajit Kumar Das, Head Dept. of Ecology and Environmental Science, Dr. Pradosh Kiran Nath, Registrar, Assam University, Silchar, Prof. Jayashree Rout, Dean, E.P. Odum School of Environmental Sciences spoke on the essence of a good environment and the impact of climate change. P. Sivakumar, Chief Conservator of Forests, Southern Assam Circle and Mr. I. B. Ubadhia, Manager Rosekandy Tea Estate were the two guests of honour also spoke on the occasion. Other speakers in the occasion were Mr. Tejas M., Divisional Forest Officer, Cachar and Prof. Parthankar Choudhury from the Department of Ecology and Environmental Science. The Chief Guest of the Occasion was Prof. Rajive Mohan Pant. The inaugural session was followed by a plantation programme in the university campus by the dignitaries. The programme was coordinated by Prof. Aparajita De and Dr. Panna Deb.

Alumni Association of Govt. Girls’ HS & MP School: A free health camp was organised on the occasion of World Environment Day at Shani Mandir, Rongpur Bazar, Sadarghat, Silchar on 5 June. The patients were examined by the President of the Alumni Association, Dr Bijoy Lakshmi Das Choudhury, Dr Orina Raha and Dr. Tonmay Das. Around 300 persons were examined by the doctors in the camp. Medicines were also distributed free of cost.

Shuktara: Plantation of saplings were undertaken by the members of socio-cutural organisation Shuktara on the World Environment Day. The plantation was done in the premises of Ban Durga Temple  at Haticherra in Udharbond constituency. Present during the occasion were President of Shuktara Saibal Sobhan Deb, General Secretary Paroma Banerjee, Dr Himadri Sekhar Das, Subrata Deb, Ranjana Das, Dr Mohd. SH Mazumder, Alim Uddin Barbhuiya, Manab Deb, Prashun Banerjee, Sonapakhi Roy, Moni Das and others.

Inner Wheel Club, Silchar & Ananya: On the occasion of World Environment Day, IWC, Silchar planted saplings inside the divider at Rangirkhari. They will also erect a gate there for easy access. Members of Club Ananya also joined hands with IWC in the plantation drive.

GC College Unit of ABVP: The members of the ABVP unit of GC College, Silchar undertook a plantation drive in their college premises. They appealed to all present there to do plantation in a routine manner. Present during the occasion were Dipankar Das, Ankush Deb, Tushar Ghosh among others.

Ujjawala Shelter Home: Staff and members of Ujjawala Shelter Home for Girls & Open Shelter Home for Boys planted saplings in their project office at Panchayat Road, Silchar on the occasion of World Environment Day. The saplings were provided to the Home by the District Forest Officer, Cachar.
