Railway starts evacuating stranded passengers at Ditokcherra & New Halflong by land & air route

May 15: Torrential rainfall since the last few days has caused havoc in many parts of North East region. Landslides at various places have resulted in immense hardship for the people. Meanwhile, large number of passengers who were travelling from Silchar to Guwahati by 15616 Express Train on 14 May got struck at Ditokcherra station as railway tracks in many places on the route were washed away by running water. Landslides too played spoilsport as the tracks got covered under heaps of mud.

On Sunday morning, North East Frontier Railway informed that all the stranded passengers of 15616 Silchar Guwahati Express were safe at Ditokcherra station. “Evacuation is going on currently. Please approach the emergency number set up at Ditokcherra station at 03843- 268419 to get in touch with your family. Alternatively, it is requested to share their contact and travel information,” tweeted NF Railways on Sunday morning.

At around 11.33 AM, NF Railway informed about the evacuation plan taken up for those passengers who were stranded at Ditokcherra. A special train was arranged for them from Damcherra to Badarpur. Most passengers have already boarded the special train at Damcherra. However, there were some passengers who were also being airlifted by Air Force to Silchar.

At 2.15 PM NF Railway informed, “Around 1000 passengers of 15616 Exp stranded at Ditokcherra have been brought up to the spl train on the other side of the damaged bridge from here the train has moved to Damchara where food and water has been provided. This special train will depart for Badarpur.”

Meanwhile, apart from this, many other passengers were also stranded at New Haflong Railway Station since Friday morning. NF Railway at around 12.30 PM on Sunday informed that those stranded passenger at New Haflong station are being moved to Maibang station by army buses. From Maibang relief train connectivity up to Guwahati has been provided.
