Automatic Weather Station inaugurated at Assam University, Silchar

ওয়েটুবরাক, ১৩ মে : আসাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বাস্তু ও পরিবেশ বিজ্ঞান বিভাগে আজ শুক্রবার স্বয়ংক্রিয় আবহাওয়া পর্যবেক্ষণ কেন্দ্র বা অটোমেটিক ওয়েদার স্টেশন-এর উদ্বোধন হয়৷  উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক রাজীব মোহন পন্থ আনুষ্ঠানিক ভাবে এর উদ্বোধন করেন।

এ উপলক্ষে পরিবেশ বিজ্ঞান বিভাগে আয়োজিত সংক্ষিপ্ত অনুষ্ঠানে পৌরোহিত্য করেন উপাচার্য পন্থ৷ শতাধিক ছাত্র-ছাত্রী, গবেষক-গবেষিকা, শিক্ষক-শিক্ষিকা এবং শিক্ষাকর্মী তাতে উপস্থিত ছিলেন৷ প্রাসঙ্গিক বক্তব্য পেশ করেন বিভাগের ডিন অধ্যাপক জয়শ্রী রাউত, বিভাগীয় প্রধান অধ্যাপক অজিত কুমার দাস এবং অধ্যাপক পার্থঙ্কর চৌধুরী।

তাঁদের কথায়, গবেষণার স্বার্থে দীর্ঘদিন থেকেই এর চাহিদা ছিল। নানা প্রতিবন্ধকতা কাটিয়ে বিভাগটির দীর্ঘদিনের স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়িত হলো এ দিন৷ সভাপতির বক্তব্যে অধ্যাপক পন্থ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সার্বিক উন্নয়নে পরিবেশ বিজ্ঞান বিভাগের সদর্থক ভূমিকার কথা অকপটে স্বীকার করেন৷ বিভাগের উন্নয়নের জন্য ভবিষ্যতে সব ধরনের সাহায্যের আশ্বাসও দেন তিনি৷

অধ্যাপক পার্থঙ্কর চৌধুরী জানান, এই স্বয়ংক্রিয় আবহাওয়া পর্যবেক্ষণ কেন্দ্রে নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের ব্যবধানে ডাটা নেওয়া যায় এবং ৩০ হাজার এরকম ডাটা আপনাআপনি স্টোর হয়ে যায়। বৃষ্টিপাতের কাল ও সময়, সূর্যালোকের সময় এবং এর প্রখরতা, বাতাসের আদ্রতা, ঝড়ের মাত্রা ও গতিবেগ ইত্যাদি বিভিন্ন রকমের তথ্য এতে স্টোর হয়। পিডব্লুডি, জলসম্পদ দফতর, ওএনজিসি ইত্যাদি বিভিন্ন বিভাগের প্রয়োজনে এই তথ্যাদি সরবরাহ করা যেতে পারে এবং তা দিয়ে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের রাজস্ব বাড়ানোও সম্ভব বলে মন্তব্য করেন অধ্যাপক পার্থঙ্কর।

May 13: It’s indeed a feather in the cap of Assam University, Silchar. An Automatic Weather Station set up in the University campus was formally inaugurated by Prof. Rajive Mohan Panth, Vice Chancellor on Friday. The Automatic Weather Station was set up at the Department of Ecology and Environmental Sciences, Assam University, Silchar.

To commemorate the achievement, a small function was organised at the department today under the chairmanship of Prof. R. M. Pant, the Vice-Chancellor of the varsity.  Amongst others, Prof. Parthankar Choudhury, Senior Faculty, Professor Jayashree Rout, Dean of the school of Environmental Sciences, Prof. Ajit Kumar Das, Head of the Department, delivered short speeches.

Many of the members present in the meeting expressed happiness the way in which the long cherished dream of the department could see light of the day by overcoming series of obstacles over the past one and a half decade. More than hundred students, researchers, teachers, non teaching staff and others attended the program.

An automatic weather station (AWS) is an automated version of the traditional weather station, either to save human labour or to enable measurements from remote areas. Automated weather stations measure all the important surface weather observations. They also offer accurate forecasting options. These stations are better than traditional ones because they provide accurate and frequent readings, have low power requirements, and can operate practically anywhere.
