1st Para Chess Tournament organised at Silchar on World Thalassaemia Day

May 10: The first Para Chess Tournament was organised at Silchar on the occasion of World Thalassemia Day on 8 May. Former Union Minister cum senior BJP leaderKabindra Purkayastha, District Development Commissioner (DDC) Rajib Roy, President of Seba Bharati Shubranshu Shekhar Bhattacharya, Principal of Women’s College, Silchar Dr Manoj Paul and former Divyang player Shekhar Deb were present as distinguished guests at the inaugural function of the Para Chess Tournament.

The event was organized by District Disability Rehabilitation Cetre (DDRC), Cachar in association with Cachar District Chess Association, Chaturanga Chess Foundation, Barak Valley Thalassemia Society, Krira Bharati, Rotary Club of Green Land Silchar, Rotary Club of Greater Silchar, Netaji Student Youth Society, Lalpani Sports Club, Time One Foundation and Yuva Shakti NGO.

World Thalassemia Day is observed on May 8 to spread awareness about thalassaemia being a blood disorder, myths related to the disease, and to help the patients lead a normal life. The day commemorates the struggles of the patients suffering from this genetic disorder and raise awareness about the disease and its symptoms.
