Assam Univ unit of BSM observes International Mother Language Day in virtual platform
Feb. 21: Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal (BSM), Assam Viswavidyalaya Samiti observed International Mother Language Day on 21 February through Google Platform. The programme started with the welcome address by Dr. Debotosh Chakraborty, Secretary, Assam Viswavidyalaya Samiti.
Three eminent personalities – Prof. Niranjan Roy, Department of Economics, Assam University and Adviser of Assam Viswavidyalaya Samiti, Prof. Biswatosh Choudhury, Department of Bengali, Assam University and Prof. (Red.) Dipti Phukan Patgiri, Department of Assamese, Gauhati University delivered on the occasion.
Prof. Niranjan Roy highlighted the importance of multi-linguistic identity of Bharat and stressed on the importance of getting education in one’s own mother tongue. Prof. Biswatosh Choudhury depicted the entire historical setting of the International Mother Language Day and urged upon all to follow one’s own language while respecting the others. He also narrated the tragic incident that occurred in Silchar on 19th May, 1961, wherein 11 great souls sacrificed their lives for the cause of their mother tongue. Reciting the poem of Shaktipada Brahmachari, a renowned poet, Prof. Choudhury highlighted the linguistic diversity of Assam in particular and India in general.
Prof. Dipti Phukan Patgiri in her deliberation expressed the resemblance and sweetness of Assamese, Bengali, Odisha and other languages. She narrated the tremendous influence of other languages like Bengali in her life and explained the uniqueness of all the languages. She urged upon all to preserve and promote each other’s language. She praised Bharatiya Shikshan Mandal, Assam Viswavidyalaya Samiti for organising such an event to promote linguistic diversity of the state. The programme was concluded with the deliberation and remarks of Dr. Barunjyoti Choudhury.
