People aged 18 can choose PMs, sign contracts but not marry! Asaduddin Owaisi
Dec. 18: Union Cabinet has passed a proposal to raise legal age of marriage for women to 21. Earlier, the legal age for marriage of girls was 18. Taking a sharp dig at this new proposal, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi said, “Men and women should be allowed to legally marry at 18.” Owaisi also questioned why people aged 18 can “sign contracts, start business, choose Prime Ministers, but not marry?” He further termed the decision of the Union Cabinet to be ‘typical paternalism.’
Taking to his twitter handle, Owaisi wrote, “Men & women are treated as adults at 18 for most critical things. Why is marriage any different? The legal age is not really a criteria; the essential goal must be to ensure education, economic progress & human development.”
Supreme Court recognised right to privacy as a fundamental right for adults. The autonomy to take decisions concerning oneself are critical to this fundamental right. This includes the right to choose a partner & the right to decide if/when to have children 10/n
