7th Medical College to come up in Assam, yet people here are forced to go outside for proper treatment

December 22: “We remain committed to peace, progress and people’s welfare! In yet another feather in our record of continuous development, is set to get its 7th medical college in Diphu. A Medical Council of India team inspected the Diphu Medical College on Dec 20 and 21.” This was tweeted by state Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Saturday.

Assam thus will now get its seventh Medical College in Diphu along with the six existing medical colleges, which are- Guwahati Medical College, Assam Medical College, Silchar Medical College, Jorhat Medical College, Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Tezpur Medical College.

Inspite of this, on the slightest pretext of disease, people from the state become forced to go outside for proper treatment. This was stated by an octogenarian retired college teacher from Silchar. He said that Silchar Medical College lacks many crucial departments. Many a times due to lack of proper equipment and specialised doctors, patients are often referred outside the state. Another noted social activist associated with blood donation movement said that the government should pay more interest in upgrading the existing medical colleges rather than opening new ones.
